The executive editorial structure consists of: Editor-in-Chief (1), Deputy Editor (1), Executive Editors (8), Copy Editors (4 min./ ad hoc), and Graphic Designer (1). We also have two (2) faculty supervisors.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief include: 

  • Ensure the journal upholds its objectives, missions, and vision.
  • Oversee the editorial process, including the assignment of submissions to editors and selection of submissions for publication.
  • Ensure the accuracy, clarity, and consistency of published content.
  • Delegate responsibilities and tasks to the editorial team.
  • Adhere to the hiring process and select the editorial team. 
  • Critically and impartially evaluate the submissions content for its academic rigor, relevance, clarity, and contribution to the field.
  • Update editorial processes, submission guidelines, and ethical standards as needed.
  • Oversee the journal’s budget, ensuring resources are used efficiently.

The responsibilities of the Deputy Editor include: 

  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in providing editorial direction for the journal.
  • Oversee the submission, review, and editing process, including screening. submissions for suitability and making editorial decisions in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Work closely with the Executive Editors of the editorial team to coordinate and guide them through the various stages of the publication process.
  • Critically and impartially evaluate the submissions for its academic rigor, relevance, clarity, and contribution to the field.
  • Update editorial processes, submission guidelines, and ethical standards as needed.
  • Adhere to the hiring process and select the editorial team. 
  • Provide mentorship and training to Executive Editors, specifically in academic writing, research ethics, and the peer-review process.

The responsibilities of the Executive Editors include: 

  • Critically and impartially evaluate the submissions content for its academic rigor, relevance, clarity, and contribution to the field.
  • Offer comprehensive and constructive comments towards enhancing the quality, clarity, and academic integrity of the submission.
  • Periodically meet with the editorial team to discuss editorial processes, policies, submission guidelines, and ethical standards.
  • Executives in their 3rd year or higher will act as mentors, guiding and supporting the first- and second-year executive editors in the editing and reviewing process.
  • Work in collaboration with Executive Editors to offer comprehensive and constructive comments towards enhancing the quality, clarity, and academic integrity of the submission. 

The responsibilities of the Copy Editors include:

  • Review and edit approved articles for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax.
  • Ensure that all citations and references are accurate and formatted correctly according to the APA 7th edition style guide.
  • Check facts and references, ensuring that all information is accurate and verifiable.

The responsibilities of the Graphic Designer include: 

  • Create and develop visual layouts for the journal, including cover designs, page layouts, and additional graphical elements.
  • Work closely with editors to ensure that the design aligns with the journal’s thematic content and editorial tone.
  • Designing and curating engaging content relevant to the journal’s focus. Including creating posts about recent publications, calls for papers, and editorial board announcements.
  • Attend editorial meetings to provide input on design aspects and understand upcoming content needs.

Hiring Process:

Editor-in-Chief 

  • When applicable, the current Deputy Editor will assume the role of the Editor-in-Chief for the upcoming academic year. 
  • In the event, the current Deputy Editor is unable to continue, upper year Executive Editors will first be considered for the position, followed by other existing board members. In any other event, upper year criminology students with research experience shall be considered.
  • The new Editor-in-Chief must be selected by the current Editor-in-Chief by April 30th of that year. 

Deputy Editor 

  • When applicable, upper year Executive Editors will first be considered for the role. 
  • In the event no upper year Executive Editors are able to continue, upper year criminology students with research experience shall be considered.
  • The new Deputy Editor must be selected by the current Editor-in-Chief by April 30th of that year. 

Executive Editors 

  • All Executive Editors are required to submit a resume/CV, a writing sample, and letter of interest.
  • Executive Editorial positions are open to all undergraduate students.
  • Executive Editors will be selected by the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor in Fall of the Academic year.

Copy Editors 

  • Copy Editors are required to submit a resume/CV, a writing sample, and letter of interest.
  • Copy Editor positions are reserved for lower year students.
  • Copy Editors (4) will be selected by the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor in Fall of the academic year.
  • Additional Copy Editors will be hired on an ad hoc basis, depending on the volume of submission.

Graphic Designer 

  • Open to all Carleton Undergraduate students.
  • Required to submit a resume and portfolio.
  • Will be appointed by the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy-Editor in Fall of the academic year.
