About the Journal

The International Journal for Creativity Inside (IJCI) is a not-for-profit, open-access journal dedicated to exploring and promoting the role of creativity in prisons and jails worldwide through a cross-disciplinary perspective. Its mission is to advance knowledge and public discourse on the role of creativity in carceral institutions worldwide by publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly research and curated, insightful perspectives and book reviews related to artistic, literary, and other creative endeavors within carceral settings. IJCI will be freely available online, and its operations will be sustained through volunteer editors.

Objectives

  1. Foster an international, multidisciplinary dialogue among researchers, artists, librarians, correctional professionals, incarcerated individuals through three years post-release, and practitioners.
  2. Promote arts-in-corrections and collateral educational programs, including re-entry and poverty reduction, in prisons worldwide.
  3. Raise awareness of and protect the intellectual property of creators in prisons.
  4. Support efforts to increase the quality of expressive works created in prisons.
  5. Promote public display of and access to expressive works created in prisons.

Editorial and Review Process

- The international editorial board will consist of experts in education, criminology, sociology, psychology, the arts, and other fields able to curate content submitted by authors and artistic creators.

- A double-blind peer-review process will ensure academic quality and credibility.

- Contributors will include researchers, practitioners, and individuals impacted by incarceration.

Rights, Distribution, and Access

- Copyright to published content will remain with the author/s.

- Journal material uses Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike terms, as below.

- The journal will be hosted on PKP: Public Knowledge Project, an open-access digital platform based at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Canada.

- PDF and HTML versions will be freely downloadable.

- Partnerships with libraries, universities, and advocacy groups will enhance visibility.

Funding Model

- The journal will operate without subscription fees or paywalls.

- All editorial work as well as contributions of content will be provided on a voluntary, unpaid basis.

- Promotion through academic conferences, social media, and professional networks.

- Engagement with scholars, prison educators, advocacy organizations, corrections professionals, and creative practitioners.

- Collaboration with university programs focusing on criminal justice and the arts.

Evaluation and Growth

- Annual reviews to assess impact, readership statistics, and sustainability.

- Expansion of content based on reader feedback and evolving research trends.

- Potential development of special issues on specific themes within creativity and incarceration.

Global Consortium for Creativity Inside

The Global Consortium for Creativity Inside, sponsored by the International Journal for Creativity Inside, is a voluntary alliance of universities, nonprofit organizations, and corporations that support the arts in carceral spaces. Members of the Consortium are encouraged to support arts-in-corrections educational programs, creative practice in prisons, and dissemination of creative work for public benefit, with acknowledgement to the creators and the correctional facilities that encourage such innovation. The journal acknowledges Consortium members on its website.

By joining this Consortium, the entity agrees to publishing its name as a Consortium member in the International Journal for Creativity Inside.
