Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The body of the manuscript does not include identifying information, such as the author’s names or affiliations.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Manuscript Title and Abstract

  • provide a descriptive title that clearly identifies the research question and the study design.
  • limit the abstract to 300 words.
  • do not include abbreviations (except for SI units) or references in the abstract.
  • for clinical trials, include the study registration number (e.g., ANZCTR).

Blinded Manuscript

  • omit all identifying information (e.g., author names, affiliations) from the manuscript body.
  • acknowledgements, funding sources, and competing interests must be listed in the “Comments for the Editor” section, not in the blinded manuscript.

Formatting

  • single-space the text and use a 12-point font.
  • use italics instead of underlining (except for URLs).
  • place all illustrations, figures, and tables at relevant points within the text rather than at the end.

Tables and Figures

  • type tables directly into the manuscript rather than inserting them as images.
  • figures may be included as images.

Referencing

  • follow the Vancouver style for references.
  • provide URLs for references whenever possible.

Ethical Considerations

  • for original research,include details of the ethical approval granted (e.g., the approving body and any reference number).

Permissions

  • obtain permission to use any copyrighted images or figures before submission.
  • ensure compliance with your facility’s publication policy when publishing information related to a health service.

Articles

JPN publishes original quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods research, and systematic reviews. Articles must adhere to the relevant reporting guidelines for the specific research design (see www.equator-network.org). Articles can be a maximum of 7000 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Literature reviews

JPN publishes high-quality narrative and integrative reviews on topics relevant to perioperative nursing. Literature reviews should have the following structure: Title, abstract, keywords, introduction, review methods, discussion, and conclusion. Literature reviews can be a maximum of 7000 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Discussion papers

A discussion paper must be an engaging piece of critical analysis on a contemporary issue of importance to perioperative nursing. Discussion papers should have the following structure: Title, abstract, keywords, introduction, discussion, and conclusion. Discussion papers can be a maximum of 2000 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Case studies

A case study uses a narrative style to describe a specific patient, event or situation. The experience that you wish to share will determine the structure of the case study. The structure may include the following: Title, abstract, history, background, presentation of the patient/event/situation, subjective and objective observations, discussion, and recommendations. Case studies can be a maximum of 2000 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Project reports

A project report briefly summarises the outcomes of a workplace project. It should have the following structure: Title, abstract, identified problem, proposed solution, project plan, project successes, opportunities for improvement, and recommendations. Project reports can be a maximum of 2000 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Editorials

An editorial is an opinion piece that addresses an issue of substantive concern to perioperative nursing, particularly those of a controversial nature or linked to a recent event. Editorials may be unstructured and can be a maximum of 1500 words in length (excluding references and text in tables or figures). 

Letters

Letters to the Editor addressing issues related to the journal content are encouraged.
